What is gypsum?
Gypsum is 21% calcium and 17% sulfate and is known to chemists as calcium sulphate di-hydrate (CaSO4 - 2H2O). Gypsum (calcium sulphate dihydrate) is an abundant natural mineral. It originates from the drying out of ancient seas and is quarried (or mined) in many parts of the world. Interestingly, gypsum is not found in New Zealand.
Gypsum as a fertilizer
Gypsum is one of the rare materials that performs in all three categories of soil treatment. It acts as an amendment, a conditioner and a fertilizer. Gypsum is a fast releasing source of sulfur and calcium and when dissolved, it releases an equal proportion of both minerals. In fact, gypsum is more soluble than lime and increases calcium content without effecting pH (contrasting with other calcium fertilizers that are slower and either raise or lower soil pH).

Gypsum piles
Gypsum is particularly useful for treating heavy (clay) soils where it is used to improve the soil's texture, drainage and aeration. Gypsum also has applications in the remediation of soil that has been damaged through compaction (heavy stock, machinery), in the recovery of sub-soils exposed by earth movement and in soils affected by salinity.
What will gypsum do for my soil?
Gypsum interacts with water to reduce crusting. And, it's great for no-till! With the improved soil aggregation and permeability that gypsum offers, surface applied fertilizers will penetrate with greater ease. As many farmers know, gypsum provides a low cost remedy for acidic and erosion prone soils, it loosens clay and compacted soil which in turn, improves soil structure. This is exactly why Waste Management companies do not want drywall dumped into landfills. The gypsum will break down the clay liner which is installed as a seal to protect the water table.
What will gypsum do for my crops, lawn or garden?
Plants need calcium to produce early root growth. Gypsum's high calcium content encourages plant growth and increases the overall calcium content of the crop. It also helps prevent some produce diseases such as scab and bitter pit.
What is a typical application?
1 to 2 tons per acre
